Hollywood Citizen-News building, declared a historic landmark by the city back in December, is poised to become L.A.’s premier private event and dining destination. Relevant Group has plans to redevelop the building as “flexible event space” and restaurants with outdoor dining areas.
Located on the corner of Wilcox and Selma, the landmark is situated in a neighborhood of fluidity. The building is positioned between Mama Shelter, a laid-back and hip French hotel that opened three years ago, and Thompson Hotel, an under-construction project also being developed by Relevant Group. Crosswise from Hollywood Citizen-News is the popular Dream Hotel and a cluster of restaurants, clubs and nightlife venues that opened up along with the project two years prior.
Built in the early 1930’s, the art deco building initially housed The Citizen News, which at one time was the fourth largest newspaper in L.A. In a historic evaluation report prepared for the city planning department, The Citizen News is described as having a reputation for being “a progressive voice that campaigned vigorously” against social injustice and police corruption.
The historic structure retains the original geometric exterior motifs, decorative metal elements, hanging pendant-style fixtures, and metal staircase railings which makes it a stand-out building in the trendy area.
